HOCC Youth Aviation Academy
In order to provide experiences that will continue to broaden the knowledge of youth with respect to the aviation community, the Heart of Carolina Chapter established a Youth Academy. As of January 2017 there are two Academies, one in Raleigh and the other in Durham.
The format of both Academies is essentially the same. The first session accepts 4th and 5th graders. These same students will make up the primary enrollment for the next five years, until the students are in the eighth and ninth grades. For example, the makeup of the second year class is 5th and 6th graders. The third year it’s 6th and 7th graders, and so on.
The very first HOCC Youth Academy participant organization was the Sanderford Road Community Center, located in Raleigh, NC. The Community Center, under the leadership of Tori Spaugh, has been an ardent supporter of the Youth Academy for some six years.
The format of the Youth Academy is essentially the same every year, but the content changes in breadth and difficulty.
