HOCC Youth Aviation Academy

In order to provide experiences that will continue to broaden the youth experience within the aviation community, the Heart of Carolina Chapter established a Youth Academy. This academy takes 9 thru 11 year old youth (Cadet Flight) through middle school ages ( 1st Flight) and teaches the basic knowledge of aviation up to preparation for flight training. The Academy is held at the Sanderford Road Community Center, 2623 Sanderford Road, Raleigh NC 27610, (919) 831-1898.

  • Meetings 1st Saturday of every month
  • February thru June, 2015
  • 11am – 1pm
  • Schedule
    • February 7thWelcome, refresher, Introduction to S.T.E.M.
    • March 7th     Aviation Career Panel, Advanced MS simulator exercises
    • April 4th        – Tour of LORD Corp Labs or GE Engine Plant (2-3hrs)
    • May 2nd         – Aviation Museum Tour or Airshow
    • June 6th          – Young Eagle Flights, Wrap-up at Johnston County

The format of the Youth Academy is:

  • Cadet Flight
    • Introduction to the Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen
    • Introduction to the world of the aviation industry
    • Introduction to the basics of Flight
    • Airplane modeling
    • Flying a flight simulator
    • Aviation field trips

Complete at least 4 activities to receive Cadet Certificate, Gift, Badge, etc.

  • 1st Flight  (6th to 8th graders)
    • Aerospace Basics – Math and science games / experiments
    • Community service projects to honor Tuskegee Airmen
    • Review of aircraft systems – field trips
    • Introduction to airport operations – field trips
    • Weather and navigation basics
    • Advanced MS simulator exercises
    • Introductory flights – EAA

Complete at least 5 activities to receive 1st Flight Certificate, Gift, Badge, etc.
